Banshu-Ori (Banshu Weave) is a yarn-dyed fabric, woven into various patterns (checks, stripes etc.) with yarns that are dyed before being woven by weaving machines. Two centuries of Banshu-Ori history commenced back in 1792, (4, Kansei era/Edo Period), when a Nishiwaki city craftsman retrieved the technique of the Nishijin-Ori in Kyoto and combined it with the local Banshu approach to weaving. The Banshu-Ori unites the soft feel of natural fibre, mainly centring on cotton and the gentle texture of a dyeing technique that uses the clear water of the Banshu region. The Banshu-Ori has earned a high nationwide share as a producer of yarn-dyed products, particularly shirts, handkerchiefs and stoles. |
